Guest Speaker for IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2005 This year for the IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2005 at Indore our invited Guest Speaker will be Dr. Runjan Chetty, Professor of Pathology, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A brief Biodata of Dr. Chetty is given here under for the benefit of the members: Dr. Runjan Chetty He is highly qualified with a string of degrees namely MB, BCh, BaO, LRCP, LRCS from Royal College of Surgeons / National University, Ireland; FFPath (South Africa); FRCPA (Australasia); FFPath (Royal College of Physicians, Ireland); FRCPath (Royal College of Pathologists, United Kingdom); FRCPC (Royal College of Physicians of Canada); FCAP (College of American Pathologists); and DPhil (St. Johns College, University of Oxford, United Kingdom). He is registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Canada; Health Professions Council of South Africa; General Medical Council, United Kingdom; and the Medical Board of Queensland, Australia. Currently, Dr. Runjan Chetty is the Professor of Pathology, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto; Staff Pathologist, University Health Network & Toronto Medical Laboratories, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and Director Residency and Fellowship Program, University of Toronto. He has previously worked in various capacities in Durban and Cape Town, South Africa, starting as an Intern in July 1982 and then as a Registrar / Resident in Anatomic Pathology and then from January 1988 to January 1991 as a Consultant / Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Cape Town. From January 1991 to February 1992 he was the Co-Deputy Director of Pathology / Senior Consultant, Bendigo Hospital, Bendigo, Australia. Subsequently till May 1993 Dr. Chetty was Senior Consultant / Associate Lecturer, Department of Anatomical Pathology, Royal Melbourne Hospital, University of Melbourne, Australia. From May 1993 to Aug 1995 he was Clinical Lecturer, University Department of Cellular Science, University of Oxford, United Kingdom. Subsequently from 1995 to September 2002 Dr. Runjan Chetty was the Professor and Head of Department, Chief Pathologist, Department of Anatomical Pathology, School of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Nelson R Mandela Medical School University of Natal & King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, South Africa, and concurrently from February 2000 to January 2002 he was the Acting Head of School of Pathology & Lab Medicine. His experience includes 5 years as a registrar / resident in training and 17 years as a Consultant Pathologist. His main area of expertise includes General surgical pathology, Frozen sections, Immunohistochemistry, Immunofluorescence, Electron microscopy, and, Molecular biology. He has also performed 650 autopsies and is involved in Under- and Post-graduate teaching. He was an examiner for the College of Medicine of South Africa in the postgraduate examinations for the fellowship of the colleges of Pathology and Dermatology and has been the external examiner for the 3rd year MB ChB students at the University of Witwatersrand and University of Cape Town on several occasions. Dr. Chetty has also been an examiner of several MMed, MD and PhD theses. Dr. Chetty is curerently supervising 3 individuals who are registered for PhD, MMed and MMed Sci degrees at the University of Natal, South Africa. He has also supervised the following completed research degrees: 2 PhD, 2 MD, 4 MMed. Dr. Runjan Chetty has vast management and administrative experience in his role as a Consultant, Co-Deputy Director of Pathology and Professor and Head of Department. He has been on several committees dealing with teaching, laboratory and departmental issues and has deputized for the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine on several occasions. Dr. Chetty has also been involved in several committees and various Faculty fora discussing curriculum reform and health care in South Africa. Dr. Chetty was a member of the South African National Accreditation scheme: a government sanctioned body to assess and award laboratory accreditation. He has been the reviewer of many grant proposals from New Zealand and Australia (Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria), Medical Research Council and the National Research Foundation. Dr. Runjan Chetty is the holder / co-holder of several research grants: MRC, University of Natal Research Fund, Kennedy-Potts Cancer Research Fund, The Dunstan Bequest and Cancer Association of South Africa. Dr. Chetty is actively engaged in research and is currently investigating the cell cycle tumour suppressor and DNA repair genes in breast, endometrial, colorectal and oesophageal cancers and nephroblastomas. The protein expression is being correlated with gene abnormalities, and clinico-pathological parameters. He has been awarded a grant to research the microsatellite status of the DNA repair genes in oesophageal cancer. He is also conducting research into various aspects of HIV-related pathology: large vessel vasculitis, Kaposis sarcoma and parotid swelling in children. He is also collaborating in a project on colorectal cancer and engaged in several smaller projects such as looking for APC deletions in intraductal papillary mucinous tumours of the pancreas. Dr. Runjan Chetty is currently the editor in chief of Journal of Clinical Pathology and Molecular Pathology. He is on the editorial board of: Pathology, Current Diagnostic Pathology, Endocrine Pathology and International Journal of Surgical Pathology. He is also an ad hoc referee for a large number of Journals namely Journal of Infectious Disease, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery, Pathology, Annals of Oncology, International Journal of Cancer, Journal of Clinical Pathology, Oncology, South African Journal of Surgery, South African Journal of Medicine, British Journal of Cancer, British Medical Journal, Journal of Pathology, Histopathology, Anti-Cancer Journal, Clinical Cancer Research, American Journal of Dermatopathology, The Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, and Modern Pathology. Dr. Chetty has presented scientific presentations at several congresses of the IAP in South Africa and Australia, the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia annual meeting and the South African Pulmonology Society annual congress. Dr. Runjan Chetty is a popular speaker and has been the invited guest speaker for a large number of talks and seminars all over the world. Dr. Chetty is a prolific writer and has 225 scientific publications in various Journals. He has also been a contributor to Books and Book chapters like being a Contributor to the WHO Classification of Tumours: Pathology and Genetics of Tumours of Endocrine Organs and a Chapter on Thyroid Lymphomas in the book titled Molecular Basis of Thyroid Cancer. Dr. Runjan Chetty has been awarded several awards amongst them being the Vice Chancellors Research Award for 1997, University of Natal; Fellow of the University of Natal, December 1999; Mary Weston Achiever of the Year Award, November 1999, University of Natal; and, Best Teacher Award for Residents in Pathology, 2003-2004, University of Toronto. He is a member of many Societies and Associations like International Academy of Pathology (SA Division); United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology; College of Medicine of South Africa; Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, United Kingdom; Member of the Royal Society of South Africa; Association for Molecular Pathologists; Pulmonary Pathology Society; Endocrine Pathology Society; Rodger C. Haggitt Gastrointestinal Pathology Society; Arthur Purdy Stout Association of Surgical Pathologists; Honorary Secretary of the Federation of South African Society of Pathologists (FSASP) 1996-1998; President of the IAP (SA Division) - July 2000-October 2002; elected member of the College of Pathology of the College of Medicine of South Africa; and, Chairman of the College of Pathologists committee for Anatomical Pathology. Dr. Runjan Chettys areas of interest include General surgical pathology, especially gastrointestinal, endocrine, cardiorespiratory, haemato-pathology and general tumour pathology; Immunohistochemistry; and Molecular biology.

Dr. Rama Gopalan SLIDE SEMINAR The Slide Seminar at the IAP-ID Annual Meeting 2005 is on Orbital Lesions being moderated by Dr. K. S. Ratnakar, Hyderabad. IAP-ID members willing to participate as Faculty members and having interesting / uncommon / unusual / classical cases with good representative paraffin blocks are welcome and should contact Dr. Geeta K. Vemuganti at the address mentioned below. Those interested should: (a) provide the full case material, (b) Any imageological data, or better, if copies of images can be sent as it is desired to release handouts, (c) Paraffin block(s), (d) contributors diagnosis, (e) Provide copies of images if any Immunohistochemistry has been done and considered important for diagnosis.
